The area is essentially made up of several 1920s and 30s housing estates with a splattering of more modern buildings. Most sought after are the Minchenden and Meadway Estates.

Southgate has a varied shopping centre served by many well known high street retail and financial outlets including a large Asda superstore and a small Marks and Spencer’s. A wide selection of smaller grocery and late night opening shops are also present.

To the north border of Southgate is Trent Park, a mix of lakes, open areas of grassland and an ancient wood; an area of genuine countryside inside the M25.

At the centre of the area stands the famous circular tube station, designed by Charles Holden in the Art Deco style. The flat roof of the raised central section appears, impossibly, to be supported by nothing more than a horizontal band of windows that provide daylight to the ticket hall.

Southgate tube station is on the Piccadilly Line and is in Travelcard Zone 4. Travelling time to central London is approximately 20 minutes.
